The Cyprus Institute (CyI, is a European non-profit Research and Educational institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The CyI invites applications for the position of CySTEM ERA Chair. The successful candidate will assume the leadership of the CyI Solar Thermal Energy Chair for the Eastern Mediterranean (CySTEM) project after his/her appointment, operating within the institutional setting of CyI. In this function, s/he will be supported by the Research and Innovation support unit at CyI and will be expected to take the lead in recruiting and managing a Research group also hired under the CySTEM project.  S/he is also expected to play a major role in the postgraduate programs run by the Institute and in particular the “Energy, Environment & Atmospheric Sciences” Doctoral program.
The appointment will be on a full-time basis. The selected candidate will be offered a tenured Professorship, with an internationally attractive salary and benefits package, commensurate to his/her high degree of responsibility and qualification.
The Project
The CyI Solar Thermal Energy Chair for the Eastern Mediterranean (CySTEM – Chair)aims to consolidate and upgrade the already substantial activity at the Cyprus Institute (CyI) Solar Energy and Desalination (SED) Group in Solar Energy, principally solar-thermal and concentrated solar power in particular. This will be accomplished by attracting and installing a cluster of outstanding researchers, led by a professor of international stature to maximally utilize and upgrade the existing facilities, and pursue a program of excellence in Cyprus with local and regional focus in the region of Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME). The CySTEM – Chair is partially funded by a prestigious EU ERA – Chair award of 2.5 Million Euro, five year grant.
The principal focus will be on Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies for electricity production, desalination, air conditioning and heating, either in isolation or in polygeneration modes. The Chair shall be embedded in CyI’s Energy Environment and Water Research Centre (EEWRC), a Centre with intense activity in climate change (and adaptation strategies), water management, and sustainability. CyI, being a technologically orientated research and educational institution, will provide the CySTEM Chair the opportunity to contribute to other related important activities of techno-economic nature, such as the definition of a road map for RES (and Solar in particular) development in the area in light of the recent discoveries of substantial Natural Gas deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The overall objectives, duties and responsibilities of the ERA Chair include the following. They will be realized under the administrative umbrella of the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center and the Graduate School of the Institute.
  • developing and implementing strategies appropriate to the Institute’s overall mission including economic projections;
  • leading the advancement of a world-class program in solar energy research;
  • enlarging, managing and developing the solar energy group and its facilities, including the PROTEAS research platform,
  • securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;
  • mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students in CyI's doctoral program (particularly the Solar Energy Research program);
  • being in close contact with the most promising initiatives in the sector at world level;
  • initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields;
  • communicating the results and implications of research conducted at EEWRC and The Cyprus Institute at all levels, including the academic community, the public at large and political and economical decision makers.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant field
  • The successful candidate is expected to be a scholar of international standing in the required or related field, and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in research management
  • S/he must have a scientific record of the highest international level in a relevant field, research expertise and leadership competencies in one of the scientific directions pursued by the CySTEM project that can be effectively pursued with his/her involvement
  • Previous responsibility for managing interdisciplinary teams and complex projects - from development to implementation - would be a strong advantage
  • Strong experience in administration would be also an advantage
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is indispensable

  • Develops a strategic vision on the future of the research field, especially for the Euro-Mediterranean Region
  • Has a compelling vision of the role of research and of the importance of science and technology capacity building in Europe and in the Eastern Mediterranean.
  • Demonstrates critical judgment in the identification and execution of research activities
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, combined with high levels of empathy and flexibility
  • Publishes and presents influential papers and books, serves on workshop and conference organising committees and delivers invited talks
  • Is an expert at managing and leading research projects
  • Has a proven record in securing significant research funding / resources
  • Beyond team building and collaboration, focusing on long-term team planning (e.g. career paths for the researchers and securing funding for the team positions)
  • Is an excellent communicator and networker within and outside the research community 
  • Is able to create an innovative and creative environment for research
